Same place. 37+ years.

Founded in 1985, the Troy Black Belt Academy has been in continuous operation for more than 37 years. Many martial-arts schools have come and gone in that time — ours keeps thriving on the loyalty of its students.

Our story

Built by a teenager who never stopped training.

The founder of the Troy Black Belt Academy began studying karate as a teenager and has over 40 years of martial-arts training behind him. In 1985, with help from his family, he established the school and has been producing some of the area's most outstanding martial artists ever since.

Now married with two children of his own, our founder values the nurturing, family-friendly environment at the studio. Many of the instructors are former students who have been part of the school for years — and share a real passion for passing on Karate.

The academy is unique in its versatility: everything from highly advanced, intense martial arts to programs built for young children and complete beginners.

What we stand for

The standards we train by

Skills are the outcome. These are the principles that produce them.

Real Self-Defense

Short, practical techniques designed for genuine situations — not point-sparring or trophies.

Direct Supervision

Every class is led, every pairing is intentional. No one is left to figure it out alone.

Personal Development

A low-pressure room where discipline, confidence, and focus grow as fast as technique.

Why the academy

An instructor-led room, not an open gym.

The studio carries a full complement of standing Wave Master targets for striking drills and cardio. Students train hands-on, paired with a similar-ranked partner, and work patterns and combinations that build balance, speed, and coordination.

  • 37+ years in business — same place in Troy the whole time.
  • Instructors who came up through the school themselves.
  • Programs spanning advanced martial arts to first-time beginners.
